Have you wondered what the prominent “Trans-Florida Central Railroad Trail” over I-95 at Fellsmere is all about? The Trans-Florida Central Railroad Trail is a newly completed 2-mile hiking and biking pathway that was built over what was originally a railroad that once connected Sebastian and Fellsmere.
The old railroad was constructed in 1896 to transport supplies between Fellsmere and Sebastian and was originally 10 miles long. The line connected to the Florida East Coast Railway and meant that cities along the East Coast as far as New York City, could have fresh Indian River County citrus and produce. The track eventually spanned 16 miles and was opened to passengers and freight transport in 1911 until it ceased operations in 1952.
Today bicyclists, joggers and walkers can enjoy the 2-mile long stretch of paved trail across I-95 from Sebastian to Fellsmere. There are future plans on extending the trail further east and west along the original railroad. Vehicles can park and the trail can be accessed from either the Fellsmere Trailhead Preserve at 11090 County Rd 215 in Fellsmere or the North Indian River County Regional Park at 9450 Fellsmere Rd in Sebastian.
