What Are Property Taxes?
A property tax is an ad valorem tax on the value of a property, usually levied on real estate by the governing authority of the jurisdiction in which the property is located. The money is used by the local government to provide important public services to the community. Everyone who owns a property has to pay property taxes.
Property Taxes Are Subject To Change Upon Change Of Ownership.
Whenever there is a change in ownership, the assessed value of the property will reset to full market value, which could result in higher property taxes. The change in ownership will prompt the removal of all exemptions, assessment caps, and special classifications. Homestead exemptions and agricultural classifications are not transferable to new owners. You must apply for your own exemptions and agricultural classification. Deadline to file for all exemptions and classifications is March 1st.
